The terms get used interchangeably in casual conversation but mean different things in architecture and construction.

In this guide

  1. 1

    Floor plan

Top-down view of one floor of a building, drawn as if sliced horizontally about 4 feet above the floor. Shows walls, doors, windows, fixtures, and (often) furniture. Used for: Layout planning, construction, real estate listings, interior design.

  2. 2

    Elevation

Side view of a building — what one face looks like from outside. Four typical elevations: North, South, East, West. Shows: Window placement, exterior cladding, roof shape, building height — anything visible from one side.

  3. 3

    Blueprint

Historical term for a copy of an architectural drawing, originally produced as white lines on a blue background (the 'blueprint' process). Now refers (loosely) to any technical drawing — floor plan, elevation, section, etc. Today: Most drawings are produced digitally (CAD) and printed on white paper. 'Blueprint' is colloquial.

  4. 4

    Other drawing types

Section — a vertical slice through the building, showing what's inside the walls and how floors stack. Detail — a close-up of a specific construction detail (door jamb, eave, foundation). Sketch — a quick, informal hand-drawn version. Rendering — a 3D photo-realistic image showing what the finished building will look like.

Frequently asked questions

Is a floor plan the same as a blueprint?

Not exactly. A floor plan is one type of architectural drawing (a top-down view of one floor). 'Blueprint' is a colloquial term for any technical drawing — floor plans included, but also elevations, sections, and details.

What's an elevation in architecture?

A side view of a building — what one face looks like from outside. A complete drawing set includes four elevations (one per side).
