Dimensions that mean what you think

Inside a room, the dimension lines measure the clear space wall face to wall face — the number you need when buying a sofa or a rug. Outside the plan, they run to the outer faces of the walls, the number a builder needs. Wall thickness is never counted twice or mixed in.

Work in feet and inches, inches only, metres and centimetres, or centimetres only, and switch any time — every dimension updates. Typing "24" into an inch-based field means 24 inches, not 24 feet.

Not every room is a rectangle. Draw an L-shape, a bay, an angled wall or any custom outline corner by corner, then divide it into rooms with interior walls. Each detected room is labelled with its size and area.

Plan scales, in plain numbers

A plan is "to scale" when every length on paper is the real length shrunk by the same amount. US plans usually use an architect's scale written as inches per foot; most other countries use a ratio. Here's what the common ones mean for a 40 ft (about 12 m) house.

A printed plan only stays to scale if it's printed at 100% — "fit to page" shrinks it. A scale bar on the plan lets anyone check.

Reading the symbols on a 2D plan

Most 2D floor plans share the same visual language, so a contractor can read yours without explanation.

Walls are drawn as thick lines or filled bands; their thickness is drawn to scale
A door is a gap in the wall with a quarter-circle showing which way it swings
A window is a thinner line set into the wall, often drawn as two or three parallel lines
Dimension lines end in ticks or arrows and carry the measured length
Stairs are a run of parallel lines with an arrow showing the way up

How do I make a 2D floor plan to scale?

Create a rectangular room by entering its width and length, or draw a custom shape corner by corner, typing the exact length of each wall. Add doors and windows at their real positions; the plan is to scale from the start, with dimensions drawn automatically.

Are the dimensions inside or outside the walls?

Both, and they don't mix: dimensions inside a room give the clear space between wall faces, and dimensions around the outside give the outer faces of the walls.

Can I print my 2D floor plan?

Yes — export a PNG or a print-sharp PDF sized for paper up to A0, with a scale bar, or print directly from the app.
