Planning a whole home means planning the spaces between rooms too: hallways, stairs and doorways. These are the minimums from the International Residential Code (IRC), the model code most US states base their house rules on. They are a sensible yardstick even where they don't legally apply — anything narrower will feel tight.

Using the floor planner: plan in this order
Start with the shell: the outside walls of each floor at their measured lengths. Divide it into rooms with interior walls, then place doors, windows and stairs. Furniture comes last, because it depends on everything else — a doorway in the wrong place can rule out a whole layout.
Then walk the plan in your head the way you walk the house: front door to kitchen, bedroom to bathroom at night, groceries from the car. If a route crosses a seating area or squeezes past a door swing, fix it on the plan.
