Home gym layout
Comprehensive home gym layout — heavy stations first, cardio along walls, clear floor for stretching/yoga, flooring, mirror wall, lighting, ventilation. Layouts for spare bedroom, garage, basement.
A home gym layout starts with the heaviest equipment (which can't move easily) and works outward. Floor area matters more than wall area. Ceiling height matters for overhead lifts. Flooring matters for safety and noise.
In this guide
- 1
Heavy stations first
Squat rack / power cage: 7×9 feet including bar movement and rack-behind room. Ceiling 9 feet for overhead lifts. Bench: 4×6 feet around it including bar setup. Smith machine: 6×8 feet. Place these against a wall first; they don't move.
- 2
Cardio along walls
Treadmill: 35×80 inches; needs 24 inches behind for safety dismount. Rower: 24×96 inches. Bike: 24×48. Elliptical: 30×70. Along walls; don't block walkways.
- 3
Clear floor area
Always preserve 6×8 feet of clear floor for stretching, yoga, plyometrics, mat work. Non-negotiable. Without it, gym feels like a storage closet.
- 4
Flooring
Rubber tile or rolled rubber: standard for equipment area. 4×6 ft tiles, ¾ inch thick. Wood platform: under squat rack and dead-lift zone — protects floor and bar. Carpet: under cardio (some prefer).
- 5
Mirror wall
One full wall mirrored — checks form, doubles visual size. Mirror height: floor to 7 feet typical. Tempered glass.
- 6
Lighting and ventilation
Bright lighting — gym needs full brightness for safety. Ventilation — exhaust fan if no windows; gyms get sweaty. Air conditioning in basement gyms.
- 7
Room sizing
Compact (cardio + free weights): 10×12 feet. Squat rack home gym: 12×14 minimum (9 ft ceiling). Full setup with platforms: 14×18+.

Tips
Floor is more important than wall
You use the floor for everything (stretching, yoga, footwork). Reserve clear floor area first.
Mirror wall is the home-gym signature
Even small gyms benefit from one mirrored wall. It checks form and doubles visual space.
Common confusions
Squat rack in 8-foot-ceiling room
Overhead presses and snatches need 9+ feet of vertical clearance. Below that, you can't safely complete overhead lifts.
No flooring under heavy weights
Dropped weights damage concrete and wood. Rubber flooring is essential under any platform with weights.
