What to measure before you make the plan
A floor plan is only as good as the numbers that go into it. Ten minutes with a tape measure saves you from a sofa that doesn't fit. Write each number on a rough sketch as you go, walking around the room in one direction so nothing gets skipped.
- Every wall, corner to corner, about 3 ft up so skirting boards and outlets don't get in the way
- Each door and window: its width, and its distance from the nearest corner
- Window sill height and window height, so tall furniture doesn't end up in front of one
- Which way each door swings, and which side it's hinged on
- The ceiling height, plus anything that sticks out: a chimney breast, a radiator, a column
- In a room that should be rectangular, both diagonals — if they match, the corners are square
From measurements to a plan you can use
Draw the walls first and get them right; everything else is placed against them. Then doors and windows, at their measured positions. Only then add furniture — using the real sizes of what you own or want to buy, not a generic block.
Before you call it done, check the walking routes. A clear path of about 36 inches is the usual minimum for a main route through a room, and doorways need space in front of them, not just the swing of the door.
