Change a door's type without deleting it

Select a door, tap the blue Type chip beside its name and pick another kind. The door is converted where it stands: same spot, same name, the new kind's usual settings.

Quick answer. Tap the door on your plan. In its settings bar, tap the blue chip beside the door's name (it reads Swing Door, French Door, Pocket Door and so on). A row of door kinds opens; tap the one you want. The door changes in place and keeps its position, its name and its hardware finish. One Undo brings the old door back.

Comparing a hinged door with a pocket door, or a French pair with a slider, used to mean deleting the door, placing another kind and dragging it back to the right spot. Now it is one tap per try, so you can flip through the options and look at each one on the plan and in 3D before you decide. It works for every kind of door in the app: Swing Door, French Door, Sliding Glass Door, Sliding Wood Door, Pocket Door, Barn Door, a doorless Opening, and on an outside wall a Garage Door.

What you'll need

  • •A floor plan with at least one door or opening (see How to add doors)

Step by step

  1. 1

Select the door and find the Type chip

Tap (or click) the door on the plan. Its settings bar opens at the bottom of the screen. The first thing on it is a solid blue chip with the door's icon, its kind and a small arrow: Swing Door ⌄ in this example, then the name box (Door) and the width (2′ 6″). The chip is the door's type; the name box is only a label you can rename, so typing Pocket door there changes the label, not the door. The chip appears on every door and on doorless openings. Windows, fireplaces and wall-mounted items don't have one.

The blue chip beside the name is the door's type. Tap it to change the type.
  2. 2

    Pick the new kind

Tap the chip. A row of door kinds opens under it, with the current kind highlighted in blue, and a note: Tap a kind to switch this door in place. Its settings reset to that kind's defaults; the size stays when it fits. Tap a kind and the door on the plan changes straight away. The row stays open after a switch, so you can tap through several kinds in a row and watch the plan each time. Tap the chip again (or close the bar with ×) when you've decided.

Seven kinds on an inside wall. The current one is blue.
  3. 3

Check the result: same spot, the new kind's settings

The door stays centred exactly where it was. What carries over: - Always: the position, a name you typed, the Hardware finish, and any curtains or blinds on it. - Between a swing door and a French door: In / Out, the hinge side and Open / Closed, and the colour. - Between a French door and a sliding glass or sliding wood door: the panel count (2P / 3P / 4P). - Between a pocket door and a barn door: the side it slides to and the Pocket / Rail length. Everything else starts at the new kind's usual setting, the same as placing that kind fresh. The height does too: a barn door starts at 7 ft, a swing door at 6 ft 8 in. Set it again in the Height box if your door is taller. In the bathroom here, the 2 ft 6 in swing door became a 2 ft 6 in pocket door: the swing arc is gone and the door now slides into the wall beside the opening.

Before: a 2′ 6″ swing door on the bathroom wall.
  4. 4

Same door as a pocket door

Comparing on the plan is the point: the pocket door frees the quarter circle the swing door needed inside the bathroom, which is often the reason to choose one in a small bath. Switch to 3D to see it slid into the wall. If you'd like to compare a barn door next, open the chip again and tap Barn Door: the slide side and track length carry over from the pocket door.

After: a pocket door of the same width, in the same spot. No arc to keep clear.
  5. 5

    When the size changes

The width stays when it's a normal size for the new kind; otherwise the door takes the new kind's standard size:

    New kindWidth kept when it'sOtherwise
Swing, pocket or barn door30–42 in36 in (3 ft)
    French door48–84 in60 in (5 ft)
Sliding glass or sliding wood door60–120 in72 in (6 ft)
    Opening36–72 in60 in (5 ft)
    Garage door96–192 in108 in (9 ft)

So a 2 ft 6 in swing door switched to a Sliding Glass Door becomes a standard 6 ft slider, centred on the old door. The new size must fit on that wall at that spot, clear of the wall's ends and of other doors and windows. If it doesn't, the app tries the kind's smaller sizes, down to its minimum (24 in for swing, pocket and barn doors and openings, 36 in for French doors, 48 in for sliders, 6 ft for a garage door). If even that won't fit, nothing changes and a note says No Sliding Glass Door fits here: the wall is too short or another opening is too close. The door is unchanged. Move the door along the wall or make room, then try again.

After any switch, set the exact width with the width buttons or Other, as usual.

Too narrow to be a slider, so the switch used the standard 6′ sliding glass door, centred where the door was.

    Garage doors: outside walls only

On an outside wall the row has an eighth tile, Garage Door. It isn't offered on inside walls, for the same reason you can't place a garage door there. A garage door switched back to a door returns to a single door of that kind (a 9 ft garage door becomes a standard 3 ft swing door); its Doors 1 / 2 / 3 split doesn't carry over.

On an outside wall, Garage Door joins the list.

Tips

Compare in 3D, then Undo

Switch the door, open 3D, look, come back and switch again. Every switch is a single step in the history, so Undo walks you back one kind at a time if you liked an earlier one best.

Name the door after the switch, not before

A name you typed (Patio, Pantry) travels with the door through every switch. The default names follow the kind (Door, French, Sliding glass, Pocket Door), so leave the name empty if you want it to keep matching.

Check Flow Check after switching to a swinging kind

Going from a pocket, barn or sliding door to a swing or French door adds a swing arc. Smart Flow Check marks anything standing in it in red straight away; see door clearance.

Common mistakes

Typing the new kind into the name box

The name box only renames the label. To change what the door is, use the blue chip in front of it.

Expecting the height to carry over

Each kind starts at its own usual height, like a freshly placed one. If you had set an 8 ft door, type 8 ft into Height again after switching.

Deleting and re-placing to try another door

There's no need any more, and re-placing loses the exact position, the name and the hardware finish. Switch the type instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change a swing door to a pocket door?

Select the door, tap the blue Swing Door chip beside its name, then tap Pocket Door. It stays in the same spot; a 30–42 in door keeps its width.

Can I turn a door into an opening (no door)?

Yes: select it, tap the chip and choose Opening. You get a doorless opening centred where the door was (60 in wide unless the door was already 36–72 in). An opening can be switched back to a door the same way.

How do I convert a door to a sliding door?

Tap the chip and choose Sliding Glass Door (patio) or Sliding Wood Door (closet). A narrow door becomes a standard 6 ft slider centred on the old door, as long as 6 ft (or at least 4 ft) fits there.

Why didn't my door change?

The new kind didn't fit at that spot, even at its smallest size: the wall run is too short or another door or window is too close. The app shows No … fits here and leaves the door alone. Slide the door along the wall or narrow its neighbour, then try again.

Does switching change my other doors or my saved design?

No. Only the door you switch changes, and only when you switch it. Undo brings it back exactly as it was.

Can I swap a door for a garage door?

On an outside wall, yes: Garage Door is in the list (a 9 ft door unless the door was already 8–16 ft). On an inside wall it isn't offered.
