Plan your Christmas tree and holiday decor — check it fits first

Search "christmas" in the furniture panel: four real-size trees (4 ft, 6½ ft, 7½ ft and 9 ft), gifts, wreaths, a 6 ft mantel garland, stockings, a nutcracker and an advent wreath. Put the tree where it clears the walkways and door swings, check its height against your ceiling, and see it lit up in 3D.

The tree is the biggest piece of furniture you bring home all year, and it's the one nobody measures. A 7½ ft tree is almost 5 ft across at the bottom: put it on your plan first and you'll know which corner it fits in, whether the walkway behind the sofa survives, and whether the star clears the ceiling.

Everything is in the Holiday Decor section of the furniture panel, at real sizes (width × depth, then height): - Christmas Tree 4 ft: 30" across, 48" tall (a tabletop or apartment tree) - Christmas Tree 6½ ft: 48" across, 78" tall - Christmas Tree 7½ ft: 56" across, 90" tall - Christmas Tree 9 ft: 66" across, 108" tall - Wrapped Gifts (Small Pile) 24" × 18" and (Large Pile) 40" × 30" - Christmas Wreath 24" and Christmas Wreath 30" (hang on a wall) - Mantel Garland 6 ft and Hanging Stockings (Set of 3) (hang on a wall) - Nutcracker Soldier (36" tall) and Advent Candle Wreath (14" across) The screenshots below use the Modern Open Living template (16 × 18 ft, 8 ft ceiling, a fireplace on the far wall).

What you'll need

  • •A design with the room the tree goes in (any template works)

Step by step

  1. 1

Search "christmas" in the furniture panel

In the furniture panel on the right, type christmas in Search Furniture & Fixtures. The Holiday Decor section lists every piece, each tile with its size. xmas, tree, wreath, garland, gifts, presents, stockings and nutcracker work too, in every language the app speaks. Browsing instead? The section sits in the Living Room, Dining Room, Bedroom and Office tabs (after Decor), and the trees and wreaths are in the Outdoor tab too, for a porch or a yard.

Search "christmas": the whole Holiday Decor section, every tile with its real size.
  2. 2

Add the tree and pick its ornaments and lights

Tap the tree that matches the one you'll buy (or the one in the loft), then +Add. It lands in the middle of the room, selected, so its panel is open: the size boxes show its real width, depth and height, and at the bottom you choose Ornaments (Red & gold, Silver & blue or Multicolour) and Lights (Warm white, Multicolour or Off). Your tree is a different size? Type its height and its width at the bottom into the H, W and D boxes.

The 7½ ft tree is 4' 8" across. Ornaments and Lights are at the bottom of its panel.
  3. 3

Let Flow Check tell you where it doesn't fit

Dropped in the middle of the room, the tree sits on the coffee table, and Flow check in the toolbar turns red. Tap it to see why. It warns when the tree overlaps another piece or a wall, stands in a door's swing or in the space you need to walk through a doorway, or blocks a fireplace. Rugs don't count: a tree can stand on a rug.

In the middle of the room the tree overlaps the coffee table, and Flow Check says so.
  4. 4

Drag it to its spot and check again

Drag the tree into the spot you have in mind: a corner, beside the fireplace, in front of a window you don't need to open. When Flow check OK comes back green, it fits without touching anything. Then check the room still works around it: the tape measure in the toolbar shows the gap between the tree and the sofa or a doorway. About 36" is a comfortable walkway; 24" is a squeeze. Trying sizes? Select the tree, delete it and add the next size down, or type a smaller W and H, until the corner works.

In the corner beside the fireplace: Flow check OK.
  5. 5

Check the tree's height against your ceiling

Flow Check works on the floor plan, so it won't warn you that a tree is taller than a flat ceiling (it only does that under a vaulted ceiling). Compare the two yourself: your ceiling height is in Plan Settings → Ceiling, and the tree's height is its H. Leave room for the star or angel on top, usually 6" to 12". As a rule of thumb: a 6½ ft tree suits an 8 ft ceiling with room for a tall topper; a 7½ ft tree fits an 8 ft ceiling with about 6" to spare (as here); a 9 ft tree needs a 10 ft ceiling or a vaulted room.

Plan Settings → Ceiling: this room is 8 ft, so a 7½ ft (90") tree leaves 6".
  6. 6

Hang wreaths, the garland and stockings on a wall

The wreaths, the Mantel Garland 6 ft and the stockings hang on a wall. Tap one, tap +Add, and a hint asks you to tap a wall to place it: tap the wall where it goes. It hangs flat on that wall at a usual height: a wreath at 4 ft, the garland at 4' 2", just above a standard fireplace mantel, and the stockings at 2' 10".

Wall pieces ask you to tap the wall they hang on.
  7. 7

Set a wreath's height, or hang it on the outside

Select the wreath to change its Mount height. Other side moves it to the other face of the wall, for example the outside of the front wall of the house. On a door: the app has no way yet to hang a wreath on a door's leaf. A wreath tapped onto a wall over a door hangs in the doorway (in 3D the door is drawn open), and Flow Check says it blocks the door. Hang it on the wall beside the door instead.

A wreath's panel: Mount sets its height, Other side moves it to the far face of the wall.

    See it lit in 3D

Open the 3D view (tick Dollhouse to look into the room). The tree is fully dressed: layered branches, glass ornaments in the colours you picked, string lights that light up the room around it, a ribbon spiralling down, a skirt at the base and a lit star on top. This is the moment to check it doesn't swamp the room.

Tips

Measure the tree's width, not just its height

Tree sizes are sold by height, but the width at the bottom is what takes your floor: 48" for a 6½ ft tree, 56" for 7½ ft, 66" for 9 ft. A slim tree? Type its real width into W and D.

Keep it out of the walkway and away from heat

Keep the tree out of the path between the doorway and the seats, and a few feet from a fireplace or a radiator. Flow Check flags it standing in a door's swing; the tape measure shows you the rest.

Gifts, nutcracker and advent wreath can go on a table

Wrapped Gifts (Small Pile), the Nutcracker Soldier and the Advent Candle Wreath sit on a table or a console in 3D when you drag them onto one. The large gift pile goes on the floor, usually under the tree.

Undo it in January

Want your normal room back? Delete the holiday pieces, or duplicate the design first (⋮ next to the design name → Duplicate) and decorate the copy.

Common mistakes

Picking the tree by the room's height alone

A 9 ft tree in a room with a 9 ft ceiling won't fit once it's on a stand with a star on top. Leave 6" to 12" above the tree for the topper.

Expecting Flow Check to catch a tall tree

It checks the floor plan: overlaps, door swings and doorways. Under a flat ceiling, compare the tree's H with Plan Settings → Ceiling yourself.

Mantel decor flagged as blocking the fireplace

Flow Check measures the floor in front of the fireplace, not height, so the garland and stockings on a fireplace wall show as blocks fireplace. They're decor hanging above the hearth, so that warning can be ignored. The stockings hang on the wall itself, so on a fireplace that sticks out into the room they end up behind it in 3D: hang them beside the fireplace if you want to see them.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas trees are there?

Four: Christmas Tree 4 ft (30" across, 48" tall), 6½ ft (48" across, 78" tall), 7½ ft (56" across, 90" tall) and 9 ft (66" across, 108" tall). Any of them can be resized in its panel to match your own tree.

Can I change the ornaments or the lights?

Yes. Select the tree: Ornaments offers Red & gold, Silver & blue or Multicolour, and Lights offers Warm white, Multicolour or Off. You see the change in 3D.

Does the app warn me if the tree is too tall for my ceiling?

Only under a vaulted ceiling. Under a flat ceiling, compare the tree's H with Plan Settings → Ceiling, leaving 6" to 12" for the topper.

Can I hang a wreath on my front door?

Not on the door itself yet: a wreath placed over a door hangs in the doorway and Flow Check flags it. Hang it on the wall beside the door, and use Other side to put it on the outside of the house.

Where is the Christmas tree in the catalog?

In the Holiday Decor section of the furniture panel. Search christmas, xmas or tree; it's also in the Living Room, Dining Room, Bedroom and Office tabs, and in Outdoor for a porch or yard.

Can I put a tree outside?

Yes. The trees and wreaths are in the Outdoor tab too, so you can place them on a patio, porch or yard plan.
