Show your design on a TV — cast or screen-mirror

RoomSketch3D doesn't have its own Cast button — but your browser and your phone already know how to put any screen on a TV. Here's the quickest way on each device.

Walking a family member through a new kitchen is easier on the living-room TV than huddled around a laptop. RoomSketch3D doesn't need a special feature for this: Chrome can cast a browser tab, and phones, tablets, and Macs can mirror their whole screen. Whatever you see on your device — the plan, the 3D view, a walk-through — appears on the TV.

These are features of your browser and your device, not of RoomSketch3D, so the exact menu names can differ a little between versions and brands.

What you'll need

  • •A TV that accepts casting or screen mirroring (Chromecast, Google TV, a TV with Chromecast built-in, Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible TV) — or an HDMI cable
  • •Your device and the TV on the same Wi-Fi network

Step by step

  1. 1

Open your design and the view you want to show

Open the design, then click 3D View. Tick Dollhouse for a view of the whole home, or walk inside to show a room at eye level. This is what your TV will show — the 3D view fills the browser window.

The 3D view fills the window — this is what you'll see on the TV.
  2. 2

On a computer: cast the tab from Chrome

In Google Chrome, open the ⋮ menu at the top right and choose Cast… (in newer versions it's under Cast, save, and share → Cast…). Pick your TV from the list. If Chrome offers Sources, choose Cast tab so only the RoomSketch3D tab goes to the TV. To stop, open the same menu and click Stop casting. This works with Chromecast, Google TV, and TVs with Chromecast built-in. Your computer and the TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network.

  3. 3

On an iPhone or iPad: Screen Mirroring

Open Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner), tap Screen Mirroring, and choose your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV. Your whole screen appears on the TV, so it works in the RoomSketch3D app and in Safari alike. Turn your device sideways for a wider picture. On a Mac, use Control Center → Screen Mirroring the same way.

  4. 4

On Android: Cast or Screen cast

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and tap Cast or Screen cast (Samsung calls it Smart View; you may need to edit Quick Settings to add the tile). Choose your TV. Your whole screen, including the RoomSketch3D app, appears on the TV.

  5. 5

    Walk through it together

Keep controlling everything from your own device — orbit, zoom, tap a room's beacon to jump into it, or walk through with the joystick. Everyone in the room follows along on the TV.

Tips

No casting device? Use a cable

An HDMI cable from your laptop to the TV is the most reliable option and has no delay — the TV simply becomes a second screen.

Fill the TV

Make the browser window full screen before you open the 3D view, and turn phones and tablets sideways, so the picture uses the whole TV.

Choppy on the TV?

Casting sends live video over Wi-Fi, so fast movement can look less smooth on the TV than on your device. Move a little slower, turn off High quality, or close other tabs and apps.

Common mistakes

Looking for a Cast button inside RoomSketch3D

There isn't one — casting and mirroring come from your browser or your device, as shown above.

Device and TV on different networks

If your TV doesn't appear in the list, check that both are on the same Wi-Fi network (not a guest network) and that the TV is switched on.

Frequently asked questions

Does RoomSketch3D have a Cast button?

No. Use Chrome's Cast on a computer, or your phone, tablet, or Mac's own screen mirroring. Both show exactly what's on your screen, including the 3D view.

Can I cast from the iPhone, iPad, or Android app?

Use your device's screen mirroring — Screen Mirroring in Control Center on iPhone and iPad, Cast or Screen cast in Quick Settings on Android. It mirrors the whole screen, so the app appears on the TV.

Which browser should I use on a computer?

Chrome, which has Cast built in. On a Mac you can also mirror the whole screen to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV from Control Center, whichever browser you use.

Can someone else control the design from the TV?

No — the TV only shows your screen. You control everything from your own device.

Can I show a picture instead of casting live?

Yes. Save a picture of the 3D view (see Save a picture of your 3D view) and open it on the TV, or share a read-only link to your design.
