Rotate, flip, and mirror — a piece or the entire plan

The inspector's Rotate and two Flip buttons handle a single piece; the plan-level Flip mirrors everything at once.

Rotation turns a piece; a flip mirrors it. For symmetric furniture the difference doesn't matter, but for an L-shaped sectional, a corner desk, a bathtub with the taps at one end, or a door that swings the wrong way, rotating can never produce the mirror image you need — only a flip can.

RoomSketch3D flips a single piece in place, keeping the same footprint, and can also mirror the entire plan in one tap for a mirrored apartment next door or a house built on a flipped lot.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Select the piece

Tap it. The inspector shows its size and, on the right, RotateRotate left 5° / Rotate right 5° buttons and a degrees field for an exact angle — with the two Flip buttons beside it.

The chaise faces the door; the window is on the other side.
  2. 2

    Rotate, or flip in place

Use rotation to turn the piece to face another wall (5° steps, or type 0–360 and press Enter). To mirror it, tap Flip left to right or Flip top to bottom. The piece mirrors in place and occupies exactly the same space — the sectional's chaise swaps to the other end.

    Rotate turns; Flip mirrors.
  3. 3

    Check the result

After Flip left to right the chaise sits in the opposite corner and the piece still fits where it was. Flip again to go back, or use Undo. Flips follow the view: if you've rotated the plan on screen, left-to-right means left-to-right as you see it.

    Same footprint, mirror image.
  4. 4

    Flip the whole plan

Next to Rotate Plan in the view controls (under Plan Settings › Rotation on phone and tablet), tap Flip plan left to right or Flip plan top to bottom. Walls, doors and windows, furniture, stairs, labels, and notes all mirror at once — ideal for the mirror-image unit in a duplex or the same house on a flipped lot.

One tap mirrors everything on the floor.
  5. 5

    Undo

A single Undo (toolbar arrow or Ctrl/Cmd+Z) reverses any flip — piece or plan.

    Undo puts it straight back.

Tips

Flip, then rotate

For a corner piece: flip to get the correct hand, then rotate in 5° steps to align with the wall.

Doors flip too

A door's swing side and direction are set in its inspector; a whole-plan flip mirrors every swing correctly.

Common mistakes

Rotating 180° instead of flipping

That turns the sectional to face the other way but keeps the chaise on the same hand. Mirror images need Flip.

On phone and tablet the plan-level flips live in Plan Settings → Plan Rotation.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotate turns the piece around its centre; flip mirrors it. An L-shaped sectional rotated 180° still has its chaise on the same hand — flipping it moves the chaise to the other side.

Does flipping change the size of a piece?

No. A flip mirrors the piece in place and it occupies exactly the same footprint.

Can I mirror the entire floor plan?

Yes. Flip plan left to right or top to bottom mirrors walls, openings, furniture, stairs, labels, and notes in one step; Undo reverses it.
