Hang a dryer on the wall above your washer

Search **wall dryer**, add the **Wall-Mounted Dryer** and tap the wall above your washer. Set how high it hangs with **Mount**, drag it over the washer with Snap on and it centres itself, then add a **Laundry Hanging Rail** in between for clothes on hangers. Check it all in 3D.

In a tight laundry the floor is the scarce part. A compact dryer on a wall bracket above the washer frees the floor, and a rail between the two takes shirts straight from the dryer onto hangers.

Two pieces make it work: - Wall-Mounted Dryer: 24″ wide, 21″ deep, 27″ tall (the size of compact and European dryers). It hangs at 5′ 2″ (62″) to its bottom edge unless you change it. - Laundry Hanging Rail 36″ or 48″: a chrome rod on two wall brackets with hangers, hung at 4′ 10″ (58″). On the plan it shows 18″ deep: the space hung clothes take up. Both are wall pieces: they stick to a wall like a shelf, not to the floor. The screenshots use a 9′ × 7′ laundry room with a utility sink.

What you'll need

  • •A design with the wall you want to use (a laundry room, a closet, a bathroom or a garage wall)
  • •A washer on the floor against that wall: Front-Load Washer (27″) or Compact Washer (24″)

Step by step

  1. 1

    Find the Wall-Mounted Dryer

Put the washer against the wall first (search washer). Then type wall dryer in the furniture search. The Wall-Mounted Dryer is the first tile in the Washer & Dryer group. You'll also find it on the Laundry Room and Garage room tabs. Tap the tile, then +Add.

Search "wall dryer": it's the first tile in Washer & Dryer.
  2. 2

Tap the wall to hang it

A blue note at the top says Wall-Mounted Dryer: tap a wall to place it. Tap the wall where it goes. The dryer hangs flat against that wall, facing into the room. (Tap the × on the note to cancel.) On the plan it's drawn as a dashed outline with no fill, the usual way to show something mounted overhead, so the washer under it stays visible.

The note tells you to tap a wall.
  3. 3

    It's on the wall

The dryer lands where you tapped. Drag it to slide it along the wall; drag it onto another wall and it moves there and turns to face the room.

Hung on the wall: a dashed outline, beside the washer for now.
  4. 4

Drag it over the washer: Snap centres it

Make sure Snap is on: the magnet in the toolbar is solid red when it is. Drag the dryer along the wall until it's over the washer. When it gets within about 4″ of centre, it jumps to sit exactly centred above the washer. It only moves along the wall, so it never comes off it. The snap works for any wall piece over a piece below it: a wall cabinet over a range, a TV over a console.

Snap on (red magnet): the dryer centres itself over the washer.
  5. 5

Set how high it hangs with Mount

With the dryer selected, Mount at the bottom of its panel is the height of the dryer's bottom edge above the floor: 5′ 2″ to start. Tap it and type a new height. Auto puts it back to the default. Keep the bottom above the top of the washer (a Front-Load Washer is 38″ tall, a Compact Washer 33″) and leave room for the rail. If the dryer is set so low that the two would hit, they no longer count as one above the other: the snap won't centre it and Flow Check flags them.

Mount sets the height of the dryer's bottom edge. Here it's raised to 5′ 6″.
  6. 6

    Add the Laundry Hanging Rail

Search hanging rail, pick Laundry Hanging Rail 36″ or 48″, tap +Add, and tap the same wall above the washer. It hangs at 4′ 10″ with its own Mount. The rod sits 9″ out from the wall and the dashed area in front shows the room the hanging clothes take.

The rail goes on the same wall, between washer and dryer.
  7. 7

    Selecting pieces that overlap

Washer, rail and dryer now overlap on the plan. When you tap there, a Select item list asks which one you mean: tap its name.

Overlapping pieces: choose one from Select item.
  8. 8

    Already placed off-centre? Use Align

If the dryer (or rail) ended up a little to one side, you can line them up in one go: 1. Tap Select multiple in the toolbar (the dashed box next to the magnet) and drag a box around the washer, rail and dryer. A blue bar says 3 selected — drag to move. 2. Tap Arrange in that bar. 3. For pieces on a top or bottom wall (as the plan is shown), tap Line up in a column. For a side wall, tap Line up in a row. If they line up the wrong way, Undo and pick the other. Because they hang at different heights, Arrange stacks them on one centre line instead of spreading them apart side by side. They meet in the middle, so the washer may shift a little too.

Select all three, then Arrange → Line up in a column.
  9. 9

    Lined up

All three now share one centre line, each still against the wall. Tap Select multiple again when you're done.

Centred one above the other, not pushed apart.

    Check it in 3D

Open 3D and tick Dollhouse to see into a closed room. The dryer hangs on the wall on its bracket, the rail with its hangers sits below it, and the washer stands on the floor underneath. Washers and dryers are drawn like the real thing: round glass door, control panel and dial.

Tips

Match the widths

The Wall-Mounted Dryer is 24″ wide, the same as the Compact Washer, so the two line up edge to edge. Over a 27″ Front-Load Washer it centres with 1½″ to spare on each side.

A 48″ rail for a wider wall

The 36″ rail fits over one machine. With a sink or counter beside the washer, the 48″ rail gives more hanging room. Its 18″ of hanging space shows on the plan, so you can see it stays clear of a door swing.

Turn Snap off for exact spots

With the magnet off, the dryer goes exactly where you drag it and doesn't centre over the washer.

Common mistakes

Tapping the floor instead of the wall

Wall pieces wait for a tap on a wall. If nothing happens, tap the wall line itself, not the floor next to it.

Dryer hung too low

If its bottom edge is below the top of the washer, the two hit each other and Flow Check flags them. Raise Mount.

Using the floor-standing stack instead

The Stackable Washer + Dryer is one floor unit with the dryer on top of the washer, at a fixed height. Use the Wall-Mounted Dryer when the dryer goes on the wall with space (or a rail) in between.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a dryer on the wall above the washer?

Yes. Search "wall dryer", add the Wall-Mounted Dryer, tap the wall above the washer, and set its height with Mount.

How high does the wall dryer hang?

Its bottom edge starts at 5′ 2″ (62″) above the floor. Change it with Mount in the dryer's panel; Auto puts it back.

Why won't the dryer centre over my washer?

Check that Snap (the magnet) is on, that the dryer is on the same wall as the washer and facing the same way, and that its bottom edge is above the top of the washer. It snaps when you drag it to within about 4″ of the washer's centre. Or select both and use Arrange.

What sizes is the laundry hanging rail?

36″ or 48″ wide. On the plan it shows 18″ deep, the space hung clothes take. It hangs at 4′ 10″ (58″) unless you change its Mount.

Does Align push the dryer away from the washer?

No. Arrange knows the dryer hangs above the washer, so it centres them on one line. Pieces at the same height (two washers side by side) are still spaced apart.

Can I hang the dryer on a side wall or in a garage?

Yes, any wall. Drag it onto another wall and it turns to face the room. It's on the Laundry Room and Garage room tabs.
