Copy a room from one design into another
In the design that has the room, tap **Select multiple** and drag a box round the room so both ends of each of its outside walls are inside, then tap **Copy**. Open the other design: a **Clipboard** pill shows what you copied. Tap it, choose **Paste room**, drag the room onto an outside wall until it snaps on, slide it into place and tap **Done**.
Kept an older version of a plan with a room you now want back? You don't have to redraw it. Copy the room in the older design, open the current one, and paste it. Its outside walls come with their windows and doors, and the interior walls and furniture you selected with it come along too, all in the same places.
There is no clipboard screen to look for. Once something is copied, a Clipboard pill appears on the plan with a count. It stays there when you leave the editor and open another design, so that is where you paste from.
A room copied this way is one that sticks out from the house: a bay, a porch, a sunroom, a wing. It attaches to an outside wall of the other design and the outline grows round it. The end of this page covers rooms inside the main shape.
Step by step
- 1
Open the design that has the room
From Home, open the design (or older version) that has the room you want. The example here is the Medium 2-Bedroom Apartment template with a dining bay on its left wall: three outside walls, a window in each, a round table and two chairs.
The older version, with the dining bay to copy. - 2
Box-select the room
Tap Select multiple in the toolbar (a dashed square with a pointer; on a phone it's in the row of icons under the floor name). Start on empty floor outside the plan and drag a box round the room. An outside wall joins the selection only when both of its ends are inside the box, so the long house wall the room hangs off is left out, which is what you want. Everything else the box touches (furniture, interior walls, stairs) is selected too. Check the blue bar: here it reads 6 selected, the bay's three walls plus the table and two chairs. If something extra got in, tap it to take it out, or draw the box again.
Select multiple, then a box round the room: 6 selected. - 3
Tap Copy
Tap Copy on the blue bar (two overlapping squares). A green note confirms it, for example Room copied: 3 walls and 3 items. Paste it into any design and drag it onto an outside wall. On a computer, Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac) does the same, but only when the selection includes furniture; with walls only, use the button.
Copy, and the note that says what was copied. - 4
Open the other design
Go back to Home (the house icon at the top) and open the design you want the room in. You can do this straight away or later: the copy waits until you copy something else or clear it. It's kept by the browser (or the app) on this device, so paste on the same phone, tablet or computer you copied on.
Home → open the current version. - 5
Find the Clipboard pill
The Clipboard pill shows how much is copied, here Clipboard (6). On a computer it sits at the bottom-right of the plan, next to the 3D preview pill and the compass. On a phone or tablet it's at the top-right of the plan. It's only there while something is copied, and it's hidden while the full 3D view is open.
Clipboard (6): the room is ready to paste. - 6
Tap it and choose Paste room
Tap the pill. The menu says what you'll get, Paste room (3 walls, 3 items), plus Clear clipboard. Tap Paste room. (For ordinary copies, such as furniture or interior walls, the same menu says Paste N items and drops them in the middle of your view.)
Paste room, or Clear clipboard. - 7
Drag the room onto an outside wall
The room floats over the plan in grey as one piece, and every outside wall long enough for it is highlighted. Its open side, the side that joins the house, is drawn dashed. Drag the room by its floor so the dashed side meets one of the highlighted walls. When it gets close, it snaps on and turns to stand outside the plan. To turn it while it's still floating, use Rotate on the blue banner or drag the round handle above it.
Floating: the highlighted walls are where it can go. - 8
Slide it into place and tap Done
Once it's on a wall the room turns blue and slides along that wall as you drag. Two measurements show the distance from each end of the wall to the room. Tap either one to type an exact distance. If it turns red, the banner says why, for example A new wall would cut through a door or window; slide it clear of the window or door, or pick another wall. When it's where you want it, tap Done.
On the wall: slide it, or type a distance, then Done. - 9
The outline grows round it
The room becomes part of the plan: the outline grows round it, its walls keep their windows, doors, thickness, height and paint, and the furniture and interior walls you copied are back in the same places. The copy stays on the clipboard, so you can paste it again elsewhere. To take it back off, tap Undo twice: the first removes the furniture that came with it, the second the walls.
Done: the bay is part of the current plan. - 10
Check it in 3D
Open the 3D view to see the room with its windows and furniture, joined to the rest of the house.

Tips
Draw the box from outside the plan
Start the drag on empty floor outside the walls. Starting on a piece of furniture moves it instead of drawing a box.
Read the count before you copy
The blue bar says how many things are selected and the copy note splits them into walls and items. If the walls number is 0, nothing on the outline was caught: the box has to hold both ends of each wall.
Type the distance for an exact fit
When the room is on a wall, tap one of the two measurements and type the distance from that end of the wall. It's quicker than nudging by hand when you know where it belongs.
Phone and computer
It works the same way on both. On a phone, drag with one finger to draw the box and to move the room; the room snaps from a little further away so a thumb can place it. The Clipboard pill is top-right on a phone or tablet and bottom-right on a computer.
Common mistakes
Looking for a clipboard window
There isn't one. Copied things wait in the Clipboard pill on the plan, with the count. If you don't see it, nothing is copied (or the full 3D view is open).
Pressing Ctrl/Cmd+V to paste a room
The keyboard shortcut, the blue bar's paste button and the long-press Paste items paste furniture and interior walls, not a copied room. A room pastes from the Clipboard pill → Paste room.
Copying on one device and pasting on another
The clipboard lives on the device you copied on. Copy and paste on the same phone, tablet or computer (and the same browser).
Selecting the whole outline
A box round the whole plan gives That is the whole outline. To reuse a whole plan, duplicate the design from Home. To keep a copy of the whole plan, use Duplicate on Home instead (see duplicate or copy a floor plan).
Catching only one straight wall
Select at least two outside walls that project from the house — one straight wall has no room behind it. Make the box bigger so it takes every wall of the room, corner to corner.
Copying something else before you paste
The clipboard holds one copy at a time. Copying a sofa in between replaces the room. Copy the room again and paste it first.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the clipboard?
It's the Clipboard pill that appears on the plan as soon as you copy something, with a count, e.g. Clipboard (6). On a computer it's bottom-right, next to the 3D preview pill and the compass; on a phone or tablet it's top-right. Tap it to Paste or Clear clipboard. When nothing is copied, the pill isn't shown.
Can I copy a room from an older version of my design into the current one?
Yes. Open the older version, tap Select multiple, box the room, tap Copy, then open the current version from Home and tap Clipboard → Paste room. Drag it onto an outside wall, slide it into place and tap Done.
Which rooms can be copied this way?
A room that sticks out from the house, such as a bay, a porch, a sunroom or a wing: two or more connected outside walls that make a shape with the house. The whole outline can't be copied this way (duplicate the design instead), and neither can a single straight wall.
What about a room inside the main shape, like a bedroom?
Its own walls are interior walls, so box it the same way and copy: its interior walls, doors, stairs and furniture are copied without the outside walls. Paste with the Clipboard pill and they land in the middle of your view, selected, ready to drag into place. Fit the outline first if the other design needs more room (for example with Exterior Wall or Add Room).
What comes along with the room?
Its outside walls with their windows and doors, thickness, height, paint and open or railing sides, plus whatever interior walls, structure (stairs, pillars and so on) and furniture you boxed with it, all in the same places relative to each other.
Why did the room turn red on the wall?
That spot can't take it. The banner says why, for example a new wall would cut through a door or window. Slide it along the wall until it turns blue, or drag it to another highlighted wall.
It says no outside wall is long enough. What now?
The room's open side is longer than every outside wall on this floor. Lengthen a wall first (see edit walls on the plan), then paste again from the Clipboard pill.
Can I paste a room into a yard?
No. A copied room attaches to a building's outside wall, so open a floor that has an outline. On a yard it says A copied room attaches to an outside wall. Open a floor with an outline first.
Can I move the room again after Done?
Not as one piece. Undo twice takes it back off (furniture first, then the walls), and the copy is still on the clipboard, so you can paste it again and place it somewhere else.
