Edit your walls right on the plan
Tap any wall on the plan to move it, type its length, split it, remove it or make it a railing. Add Room grows the plan, and the Outline Editor handles the rare corner fix.
Your walls are edited where you see them: on the plan. Tap a wall and everything you can do to it appears beside it and in its settings panel. You can drag it, type its exact length, split it in two, remove it, or turn it into a railing. The rest of the plan updates as you go, so you can watch the rooms change size. Nothing opens in a separate screen and there's no Update button to remember.
Looking for Edit Floor Plan Shape (or the Edit Floor pill on a phone)? It's gone. Everything it did for walls now happens on the plan, as this page shows. The few one-off outline fixes it was still needed for, like dragging a single corner, squaring every corner or adding exterior walls of any shape, live in the Outline Editor under Plan Settings → Layout. See The Outline Editor.
What you'll need
- •A design open in the editor, on a computer, tablet or phone
Step by step
- 1
Tap a wall to select it (outer or interior)
Tap the wall. An outer wall opens its settings panel (at the bottom of the screen on a phone) with Length, height, thickness, Type: Wall | Railing, the load-bearing switch and Remove. A small length panel also appears beside the wall, and a Split button sits just outside it. An interior wall opens the Interior Wall panel (Length, Thickness, Style, Height), with round scissors, copy and delete buttons next to the wall. On a phone the settings panel opens along the bottom of the screen, the same controls stacked. Tap an empty spot, or press Esc, to deselect.
Tap an outer wall: its length, padlock and link sit beside it, Split just outside. - 2
Drag the wall to move it
With the wall selected, drag it in or out. The walls joined to it stretch to follow, doors and windows ride along, and the measurements update live so you can size a room by eye. The link button in the small panel beside the wall decides whether walls attached to it move too (Joined walls move too) or stay put (Wall moves on its own). For an outer wall that means the interior walls that meet it; the outer walls at its two ends always stretch. On a computer, holding Alt (Option on a Mac) while you drag moves the wall on its own once. Outer walls follow the toolbar's snapping button. With it on, a wall lines up with parallel walls as it comes close and moves in neat steps. With it off, the wall goes exactly where you drag it. Short outer walls, down to 6 inches, can be dragged too.
Drag a selected wall; joined walls stretch and the numbers update live. - 3
Type an exact length
Got a tape-measure number? Tap the length in the small panel beside the selected wall (or the Length field in its settings panel) and type it. Feet and inches, inches, or metres and centimetres all work. While you type, a pin marks the end that stays put and an arrow marks the end that moves. Tap the arrow to keep the other end instead. Full details: Set an exact wall length.
- 4
Split a wall in two
Select the wall, then tap Split next to an outer wall, or the scissors button next to an interior wall. A blue note at the top of the screen says Drag the pin along the wall, then tap the scissors to split. A pin appears on the wall: drag its round head along the wall. The tip marks the exact spot, so your finger never covers it. Dots mark where other walls meet this one; tap a dot to jump there. Stretches shown in red, like a window or door, can't be split. Away from a dot you see the distance from each end of the wall; tap a distance to type it. When the pin is where you want it, tap the scissors on the wall to split, or tap the small × beside the pin to cancel. Both halves keep the wall's height, thickness, paint and name, and doors and windows stay exactly where they were. Each half is now its own wall: drag one out to make a bump-out, or remove it to open that stretch.
Drag the pin, tap a distance to type it, then tap the scissors. - 5
On a phone, it works the same way
On a phone, tap the wall and its settings open along the bottom of the screen. Split sits next to the wall, and the blue note runs across the top. The pin's round head sits off to the side of the wall, so your finger never covers the spot you're splitting at, and the two distances show below the wall. Pinch to zoom in when you want a finer position, or tap a distance and type it.
Phone: the pin's head stays clear of your finger. - 6
Interior walls: the same, plus copy and delete
Tap an interior wall and three round buttons appear next to it: scissors (split, exactly as above), copy and delete. The small panel beside it shows its length (tap to type), a padlock and a magnet that switches snapping on or off for that wall. Drag the crosshair at either end to change its length, or pull the blue handle to add a wall connected to it. More in Interior walls and partitions.
Interior wall: scissors, copy and delete beside it. - 7
Remove a wall, or bring it back
In an outer wall's settings panel, tap Remove. The wall is taken out and that side of the room is left open, for an open-plan side, a porch edge or a gap into the next space. The room's outline and floor stay where they are. Select the open side and tap Restore to put the wall back. An interior wall is deleted with its trash button instead. Undo brings back either kind.
A removed wall leaves that side open; Restore puts it back. - 8
Make a wall a railing (Wall | Railing)
In an outer wall's settings panel, set Type to Railing and pick a style: Spindle, Pony Wall, Glass, Horizontal Slat, Cable, Wrought Iron or Picket. Use it for a loft edge, a landing over a living room or a half wall by the stairs. Tap Wall to turn it back into a solid wall. Interior walls have their own Style choices in their panel: Full, Pony, Glass, Railing or Partition. On a yard floor the outline is a fence, so you get fence styles instead. See Railing styles.
Type: Wall | Railing, then pick a railing style. - 9
Grow the plan with Add Room
To add space, open Build (on a phone, Structural & Interior) and tap Add Room, the first tile under Structural. Tap the outside wall the new room sits against and drag its corners to size it, with live measurements. Then tap Done. Pull the corners into the plan instead, or tap an interior wall, to divide the space inside. The new room gets interior walls only where there aren't walls already. Doors, windows and fixtures you've already placed never move. See Add a room.
- 10
Lock a length so nothing changes it
Tap the padlock next to Length to lock that wall's length. Edits that would change it, like resizing a neighbouring wall, are stopped with a message naming the locked wall. Each piece of a split-up measurement has its own padlock too: tap the number, then the padlock (on a computer, hover over the number and click it). A locked wall can't be split until you unlock it.
- 11
Check corners and work on a rotated plan
Turn on Layers → Show corner angles to see the angle at every corner, with square corners in green. It's the quickest way to spot a corner that's slightly off. Everything on this page also works with the plan rotated (Plan Settings → Rotation): the split pin, distances and handles follow the wall, and their text stays upright. See the Layers menu and Rotate or flip the plan.
Tips
Type when you have a number, drag when you don't
Dragging is for sizing by eye. If you measured the wall, type the length, and lock it if it must not change.
Split where a real wall meets it
The dots on a wall you're splitting mark where interior walls meet it. Splitting there gives you the outer wall pieces that match your rooms, ready to move or remove one by one.
Moving a wall on its own
Want to move a wall without stretching the walls joined to it? Tap the link button beside it so it reads Wall moves on its own, or hold Alt (Option on a Mac) while you drag.
Undo is always there
Every move, split, removal and railing change can be undone with Undo (Ctrl+Z on a computer).
Common mistakes
Looking for Edit Floor Plan Shape
That button and the phone's Edit Floor pill were removed. Tap the wall on the plan instead. For a one-off corner fix, use Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor.
Removing a wall to make the room smaller
Remove leaves that side open; it doesn't shrink the floor. To make a room smaller, drag the wall in or type a shorter length.
Splitting inside a door or right at a corner
The note at the top says why a spot can't be split: Not inside a door, window, balcony or bay, Too close to the corner, Unlock this wall's measurements first or A curved wall can't be split. Slide the pin a little, or unlock the length.
Frequently asked questions
Where did Edit Floor Plan Shape go?
It was retired in October 2026, on the web, iPhone, iPad and Android. Everything it did for walls is now done by tapping the wall on the plan: move, type a length, Split, Remove / Restore, and Wall | Railing. Use Add Room to grow the plan. The editor itself, now called the Outline Editor, still opens from Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor for one-off fixes: dragging or deleting a corner, All 90°, Add Exterior Walls, Re-scale, and Reposition this floor on an upper floor.
How do I drag a corner?
On the plan you move walls, not corners. To move a corner, move the two walls that meet there, by dragging each one or typing its length. That keeps every wall straight and every length exact. If you really want to drag a single corner (to make an angled wall, say), open Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor, drag the corner, and tap Update Floor Plan.
How do I add a wall to the outline, like a bump-out or an extension?
For a rectangular addition, use Build → Add Room and tap the outside wall it sits against. For a small bump-out, Split the wall twice and drag the middle piece out. For an extension of any other shape, open Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor and tap Add Exterior Walls. Tap a corner to start, pull the blue handle to draw each new wall, and release on a corner or wall to close. Then tap Update Floor Plan. The stretch of old outside wall that ends up inside becomes an interior wall.
How do I remove a whole room I added by mistake?
Right after adding it, Undo. Later, you can drag its outer wall back in line with the rest of the plan. Or open Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor, tap each of the room's outer corners and tap Delete, then Update Floor Plan.
Does editing walls move my furniture?
No. Furniture stays where it is. If a piece ends up in a wall or outside the room, Smart Flow Check points it out so you can move it.
Can I still edit the yard boundary this way?
The yard is edited in its own editor, which keeps its full toolset: Split Boundary, Add Boundary, Remove Boundary, Boundary Style and fence length, thickness and height. Open it with Edit Yard in the Floors menu, from any floor.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. Everything on this page works the same on a phone. The wall's settings open as a panel at the bottom of the screen, and the split pin is sized for a finger, with its tip off to the side so you can see the exact spot.
