Hide the yard to focus on the house

In a design with a yard, untick Layers → Show yard. The lot, fences, ground cover, zones and everything standing out in the garden step aside in the plan and in 3D, and the plan zooms to your house. Nothing is deleted: tap Yard hidden, or the Yard chip in 3D, to bring it all back.

A yard makes a design feel real: the lot, the fences, a lawn, a patio, the trees and planting beds, maybe a pool or a pergola. On a big property it also takes over the screen. The house shrinks to a small block in a sea of green, hundreds of plants sit on top of everything, and when you only want to rearrange the living room you keep tapping a shrub by mistake.

Show yard in the Layers menu is the switch for that. Untick it and the whole garden steps aside, in the plan and in the 3D view, and the plan zooms in to fit your house. It is a view setting, not an edit: the yard, every plant and every zone stay in your design exactly as you left them. Exports don't follow this switch (more on that below). Tick it again, or tap the Yard hidden button on the plan, and the garden comes back.

Customers asked for this to "see only the house", to work on the interior of a ground floor surrounded by a large garden, and to take 3D pictures of the rooms without the landscaping in the way.

What you'll need

  • •A design with a yard around the house (Floors menu → Add Yard; see Fences and property lines)

Step by step

  1. 1

    See what the yard covers

On a ground floor with a yard, the plan shows the lot (the green ground cover inside your property line), the fence line around it, your zones (lawn, patio, walkway, driveway, garden beds and the rest of the Yard Zones), and every item standing out in the garden: trees, shrubs, a pool, a hot tub, a pergola, outdoor furniture, a fire pit. Zoomed out, the house is only a fraction of the picture. That's the part Show yard hides. The house, its rooms and everything inside it are never touched.

A house with a full garden: the lot, zones and outdoor pieces fill most of the plan.
  2. 2

Open Layers and untick Show yard

Open Layers, the first button in the toolbar above the plan (on a phone, the first icon in the toolbar row), and untick Show yard. It sits under Show flooring. The row is only listed when the design has a yard around the house, the one you add from the Floors menu with Add Yard. It's listed on every floor of the design, because the 3D view shows all floors together. Like every Layers row, it starts on and your choice is remembered on this device and browser, for every design you open there.

Layers → Show yard. Untick it to hide the garden.
  3. 3

The plan zooms to your house

With Show yard off, the lot, the fence line, the zones and the outdoor items disappear, and the plan zooms to fit the house: its outline plus any walls drawn past it, so an annex or a shed drawn with walls isn't cut off. It's the only Layers row that moves the view. (In room focus mode the view stays where you put it.) While the yard is hidden, zooming out stops at the house instead of the whole lot, and nothing out in the garden can be tapped, hovered or caught in a box selection, so you can work on the rooms without picking up a tree. Wall measurements that used to dodge the porch furniture are laid out as if it weren't there.

Same view, yard on (left) and off (right). The rooms, cars in the garage and interior furniture stay.

What counts as "in the yard"

An item is in the yard when its centre is outside the outline of the building. It's the same rule Smart Flow Check uses to decide what's outdoors. So: - Hidden: trees, plants and planters in the garden, a pool or hot tub, a pergola and what stands under it, patio and garden furniture, outdoor lights and anything else placed out on the lot, plus all zones (lawns, patios, walkways, driveway, beds). - Kept: everything inside the house, including the cars in an attached garage, and pieces standing on a balcony or deck you built with Balcony / Patio, because a deck is part of the house. - Borderline: a piece pushed against the outside of a wall, such as a planter right by the door, hides when its centre is outside the wall line and stays when its centre is inside. A porch or patio you drew as a zone is part of the yard and hides with it; one built as a balcony or deck stays.

Bring the yard back: the Yard hidden button

Because the setting is remembered, a garden you hid last week is still hidden when you open the design today. So the plan shows a Yard hidden button (an eye with a line through it), next to the 3D preview button, whenever the yard is hidden on the floor you're looking at. Tap it and the yard is back, exactly where you left it. Ticking Layers → Show yard does the same. The button is shown on the floor that has the yard (the ground floor). On upper floors there's no yard on the plan to miss, so there's no button; the Layers row is still there. Showing the yard again doesn't move the view. Zoom out to see the whole lot.

Yard hidden: one tap shows the garden again.

Hide the yard in 3D: the Yard chip

The 3D view follows the same setting. With the yard hidden, it leaves out the ground, the fences, the zones and every outdoor item, and frames the house on its own, so the rooms fill the screen. The small 3D preview on the plan does the same. In the 3D view itself, the row of switches at the bottom right has a Yard chip next to Ceiling. Untick it to hide the garden while you look around, tick it to bring it back. It's the same switch as Layers → Show yard, so the plan follows whatever you pick there. The chip only appears in designs that have a yard. Walk mode and the AI Render Studio use what the 3D view shows, so a render taken with the yard hidden shows the house without its garden.

3D with the Yard chip on (left) and off (right): only the house remains, framed larger.

Things that turn the yard back on by themselves

So that nothing you add vanishes under your finger, the yard switches itself back on when you work on it: - Add Yard or Edit Yard in the Floors menu (Remove Yard doesn't). - Picking a Yard Zones tool to draw a lawn, patio or other zone. - Anything new landing out in the lot: a piece you place or drop there, items you paste there, a piece you drag out of the house onto the lot, or an outdoor item that Undo brings back. Hiding the yard also lets go of anything selected out in it (a zone or a garden item) and cancels a zone you were halfway through drawing.

Tips

Hide it while you furnish, show it to present

Work on the rooms with the yard hidden: faster to read, nothing outside to tap by accident. Turn it back on to show the whole property, or to take a 3D picture of the house in its garden.

Interior renders without the garden

Hide the yard before you open the AI Render Studio when the picture is about the rooms. For an outside shot of the house, leave it on so the lawn, fences and planting are in the picture. See photorealistic renders.

A lighter plan on a big lot

A garden with hundreds of plants is a lot to draw. Hiding it while you work inside gives the plan and the 3D view less to draw, which helps on an older laptop or tablet.

Zoom out after showing it again

Turning the yard back on leaves the view where it is, zoomed to the house. Zoom out to see the whole lot again; while the yard shows, zooming out reaches all the way to the property line.

Common mistakes

Thinking the garden was deleted

If your plants, lawn and fence are gone, look for the Yard hidden button on the plan or the Show yard row in Layers. Hiding never deletes anything. Only Floors → Remove Yard deletes the yard, and it always asks first.

Expecting the export to match the screen

Show yard only changes what you see on screen; PNG, PDF and Print ignore it. Today those files draw the house plus the pieces standing out in the garden (trees, plants, a pool, garden furniture), but not the lot itself, its fences or the yard zones, whether the yard is shown or hidden. To share the whole garden, use Save image in the 3D view or a screenshot of the plan.

Expecting it on another device

Like the other Layers rows, Show yard is remembered per device and browser, not in the design. Your phone, your computer and anyone you share the design with each see the yard until they hide it themselves.

Looking for the Yard hidden button on an upper floor

The button only appears on the floor that has the yard. On other floors, use Layers → Show yard or the Yard chip in 3D.

Frequently asked questions

How do I hide the garden and see only the house?

Open Layers and untick Show yard. The lot, fences, zones and everything out in the garden disappear from the plan and the 3D view, and the plan zooms to the house.

Does hiding the yard delete my plants or zones?

No. It's a view setting. Everything stays in your design, and turning Show yard back on (or tapping Yard hidden) shows it exactly as it was.

I can't see my yard anymore. Where did it go?

It's probably hidden. Tap Yard hidden at the bottom of the plan, or tick Layers → Show yard. The setting is remembered on your device, so a yard hidden earlier stays hidden when you come back.

Why isn't Show yard in my Layers menu?

The row is only listed when the design has a yard around the house. Add one from the Floors menu with Add Yard. See fences and property lines.

Can I hide the yard in 3D only?

No, it's one setting. The Yard chip in the 3D view and Layers → Show yard are the same switch, so the plan follows what you choose in 3D and the other way round.

Which items get hidden?

Every item whose centre is outside the building's outline, unless it stands on a balcony or deck: trees, plants, a pool, a pergola, garden furniture, outdoor lights. Furniture inside the house, including an attached garage, stays.

Will my PDF or printed plan leave out the yard?

Show yard doesn't change exports: hiding it only affects what you see in the editor and the 3D view. A PNG, PDF or print today draws the house and the pieces standing out in the garden (trees, plants, a pool), but not the lot, its fences or the yard zones, so the file doesn't show the garden as you drew it either way. For a picture of the whole garden, use Save image in the 3D view.

Can I remove the landscaping temporarily for an interior render?

Yes. Hide the yard, then open the 3D view and the AI Render Studio: the render shows what the 3D view shows, so the garden isn't in it. Turn the yard back on afterwards.

Can I hide only the plants and keep the lawn and fence?

Not with this switch: Show yard hides the whole yard together. To declutter just the plants, select several with a box selection and delete or move them (Undo brings them back).

Do upper floors change?

The yard belongs to the ground floor, so upper-floor plans look the same. The Layers row is listed on every floor because the 3D view shows the whole house, garden included.
