Split, slide, and resize walls exactly
Type where to split, drag the handle to slide, and watch both lengths update live — no shape editor required.
Rooms are rarely the size you first typed, and "about there" is how furniture ends up not fitting. RoomSketch3D gives you three exact ways to change an exterior wall, from the fastest to the most surgical: type its length, slide it with a handle, or split it at a measured point.
The first two happen right in the main editor. The third lives in Edit Floor Plan Shape, where a split wall becomes two independent walls you can move, remove, or extend into an alcove.
Step by step
- 1
Type a wall's length
Tap any outside wall. Its inspector opens with Length: — enter the measurement you took (feet-and-inches, inches, or metres and centimetres; decimals accepted) and press Enter. The wall becomes exactly that long; the walls it joins adjust to keep the corners closed. The same inspector sets thickness, height, and the load-bearing flag.
Tap a wall: Length, thickness, height, load-bearing. - 2
Slide a wall with its handle
With the wall selected, drag the handle at its middle in or out. The whole wall moves, the two walls it joins stretch to follow, and the dimensions update live — so you can size a room by eye. It softly snaps into line when it comes level with another wall in the plan.
Drag the mid-wall handle; joined walls stretch. - 3
Split a wall at an exact distance
Tap Edit Floor Plan Shape in the Build panel, then Split Walls. The hint reads Tap a wall to split it, then type the exact distance. Tap the wall: a field opens titled Split this wall (16') with From this end — type how far along to split, and the two resulting lengths (6' + 10') update as you type. Tap Split.
Type the distance; both lengths update live. - 4
Work with the pieces
Each piece is now its own wall. Split it again the same way, tap Add Walls to pull a new segment from the split point into an alcove or bump-out, or use Remove Walls to open a side. When the outline is right, tap Update Floor Plan.
Split walls are independent walls.
Tips
Measure the wall you can actually reach
Type the length for the wall you measured with the tape; let the joined walls follow.
Split where the real corner will be
Splitting at the exact distance is how you set up a bay, a bump-out, or a future addition without dragging.
Hold Shift while dragging corners
In the shape editor Shift locks corners to 90°.
Common mistakes
Dragging a handle when you know the number
If you have a measurement, type it. Dragging is for sizing by eye.
Splitting in the main editor
Split Walls lives in Edit Floor Plan Shape. The main editor's wall handle slides; it doesn't split.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a wall an exact length?
Yes. Tap the wall and type the length in its inspector. It applies exactly, and the joined walls adjust to keep the corners closed.
How do I split a wall at a precise point?
Edit Floor Plan Shape → Split Walls → tap the wall → type the distance from the end in the popover → Split. Both resulting lengths update live as you type.
What happens to the room when I slide a wall?
The two walls it joins stretch to follow, measurements update live, furniture stays in place, and the wall snaps into line when it comes level with another wall.
