Plan a food truck or trailer layout
Draw the truck's inside as a room, then Auto-furnish → Food Truck: pick a body size and a single or double line, and it lays out the cook line, cold storage, sinks and service counter. A Food-truck checklist then shows which health-code essentials are still missing.
A food truck is a kitchen the width of a hallway: get the fryer, the hood and the sinks wrong on paper and they're wrong in steel. RoomSketch3D has a Food Truck tab of commercial equipment, an Auto-furnish layout made for truck bodies, and a Food-truck checklist of the health-code essentials most areas ask for.
The checklist is a reminder, not an approval: it says so itself (Typical health-code essentials — not legal advice; codes vary by area.). Always confirm with your local health department.
What you'll need
- •A new design (a plain rectangle the size of the truck's inside)
Step by step
- 1
Draw the inside of the truck
Start a new design with Enter width & length and use the truck's inside measurements, for example 18 × 7 ft for a medium truck or 20 × 8 ft for a trailer. You can add the serving window as a window and the back door as a door, so they show on the plan and in 3D (Auto-furnish lays the equipment along the walls; check afterwards that nothing blocks the window or the door). See Create a rectangular floor plan.
- 2
Open Auto-furnish and choose Food Truck
Tap the Auto-furnish wand in the toolbar and drag a box over the truck, tracing its walls. In the panel, tap Whole rooms, then Food Truck under Room type.
Auto-furnish → Whole rooms → Food Truck. - 3
Pick the truck size, the line and the equipment
- Truck size: Small · 7×12 ft, Medium · 7×18 ft, Large · 7×25 ft, Trailer · 8×20 ft, or Custom (drawn) to keep the box you drew. A preset snaps the box to that body, centred where you drew it. - Layout shape: Double line puts equipment along both long walls; Single line uses one wall. - What to include: Reach-in fridge, Prep-top fridge, Prep table, Flat-top griddle, Deep fryer, Grease hood, 3-compartment sink, Hand-wash sink and Service counter start on. Turn on Reach-in freezer, Wire shelving, Char-broiler, Range / burners, Wok range, Steam table, Water tanks or POS / register if you need them (scroll the list). Tap Generate.
Medium · 7×18 ft, Double line, default equipment. - 4
Pick a variation and tap Done
Four variations are generated; tap Variation 1–4 to compare them on the plan (the first can take a second to appear), or View in 3D. The grease hood is one long canopy over the whole cook line, with the griddle and fryer under it. Tap Done to keep one: every piece is then ordinary furniture you can move, resize, swap or delete. Back returns to the settings.
Variation 1 of 4. Done keeps it. - 5
Read the Food-truck checklist
As soon as the design holds any food-service equipment, a Food-truck checklist card appears at the bottom left. Its badge counts what's missing; tap it to open the list: - 3-compartment sink - Hand-wash sink - Hood over cooking - Fire suppression at the cook line - Fresh + gray water tanks The hood and fire-suppression checks only count when there's cooking equipment (a steam table alone doesn't need them). Auto-furnish never adds fire suppression, and its Water tanks option adds the fresh-water tank only, so those two rows stay open until you add the pieces yourself.
Two items still missing. - 6
Add fire suppression and the water tanks
Search the catalog for Fire Suppression + Class-K, Fresh Water Tank and Gray Water Tank, add each, and drag it into place: the suppression unit at the cook line, the tanks where the plumbing runs (often under or beside the sinks). Each row ticks green as its piece arrives, and the badge turns into a check mark.
All five essentials in place. - 7
Walk the galley in 3D
Open 3D (tick Dollhouse to cut away the walls facing you) or Walk down the aisle. The equipment is modelled in stainless steel: the fryer's baskets, the griddle plate, the sink bowls and drainboards, the hood over the line. If you have to turn sideways to pass, the aisle is too narrow: go back to 2D and move or swap a piece.
Hood over the cook line, reach-in, hand sink and 3-compartment sink.
Tips
Browse everything in the Food Truck tab
The Food Truck tab of the furniture panel holds more than fifty pieces: griddles, fryers, char-broiler, ranges, wok range, convection oven, steam table, panini press, espresso and soft-serve machines, reach-ins, prep-top and undercounter fridges, sinks, dish tables, a commercial dishwasher, ice machine, hoods, shelving, service counter, POS, menu board and more. See What's in the furniture catalog.
Service order
Most galleys run store → prep → cook → wash → serve. Keep the hand-wash sink where staff can reach it without crossing the cook line, and the service counter by the window.
Keep a drawn body
If you drew the box around a real truck interior, leave Truck size on Custom (drawn) so it isn't snapped to a preset.
Common mistakes
Treating a green checklist as approval
It checks that five pieces exist, not where they are or whether they meet your local code. Your health department may want more (a separate prep sink, a specific hood listing, tank sizes).
Drawing the truck's outside size
Use the inside dimensions: wall thickness and wheel wells eat into a truck's floor quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I plan a food truck or food trailer in RoomSketch3D?
Yes. Draw the truck's inside, then Auto-furnish → Whole rooms → Food Truck, pick a size (Small, Medium, Large, Trailer or your own) and tap Generate. Or place the equipment yourself from the Food Truck tab.
Which truck sizes are built in?
Small · 7×12 ft, Medium · 7×18 ft, Large · 7×25 ft and Trailer · 8×20 ft, plus Custom (drawn) for any size you draw.
Why does the checklist still show fire suppression or water tanks?
Auto-furnish doesn't place a fire-suppression unit, and its Water tanks option adds only the fresh-water tank. Add Fire Suppression + Class-K and both Fresh Water Tank and Gray Water Tank from the catalog.
Is the Food-truck checklist legal advice?
No. It lists typical health-code essentials; codes vary by area, so confirm with your local health department.
Can I plan a café, restaurant or coffee cart instead?
Yes. The café and restaurant templates are a fast start: see Plan a café, shop or restaurant from a template. The Food Truck equipment works in any design.
