Importing a floor plan with AI tracing

Step by step

   Tap Floor Plan Image or PDF on Home

   On Home, under Start a new floor plan, tap Floor Plan Image or PDF (Trace it yourself or let AI draft it). Your device's file picker opens straight away: choose a JPG, PNG or WEBP picture, or a PDF. In the editor, the house button at the top left takes you to Home.

   Check the picture, crop it, then tap Next

   The Import floor plan window shows your picture. It works best with a clear, high-resolution plan: the sharper the walls and labels, the better the trace. - Crop it to just the plan you want. Leave out other floors, titles and the edges of a screenshot; a screenshot with two floors side by side should be cropped to one. - For a PDF with several pages, use ‹ › under the picture (Page 1 of 3) to go to the page with your plan. - Wrong file? Choose different. Then tap Next.

   Name it, choose Let AI draft it, tap Next

   Type a Design name (you can change it later), tap Let AI draft it (AI traces the walls, doors, and windows for you to refine) and tap Next. A note explains that some things may be off and that you'll check the draft on the next steps. Prefer to draw it yourself? Pick Trace it myself instead: see trace a floor plan yourself.

   Wait while the AI reads your plan

   You'll see Reading your floor plan… with a timer (Working for 0:09). A simple plan takes well under a minute; a detailed one can take a few minutes. The reading carries on even if you switch apps or your phone's screen locks: come back to this screen and the result is waiting. If something goes wrong, the screen says what happened, with Try again or Trace it myself instead.

   Step 1 of 3 · Calibrate: set the scale

   Drag the two markers ① and ② onto the ends of something whose length you know: usually a wall or dimension line with its measurement written on the plan (here, the plan's 30-foot overall width). A magnifier shows while you drag. Type that length under Real distance (switch between ft/in and m/cm) and tap Set scale →. This one measurement is what makes every wall come out at its real size.

   Step 2 of 3 · Walls: check the AI's walls

   The AI drew the exterior walls in blue and the interior walls in purple, on top of your plan. The heading counts them (Walls · 4 exterior · 8 interior). Compare them with the drawing underneath: - Tap a wall to select it, then drag it to line it up. Joined walls and doors follow. - Tap a corner to select it, then drag it to move just that corner. - With one selected, the trash can deletes it and + adds a corner. - Missing an interior wall? Tap Add a wall, drag the round marker to where it starts, then drag its + tab to each corner (or tap each corner) and tap Done drawing. Draw straight through doorways; doors come next. - 90° / Any at the bottom switches between square walls and walls at any angle. ↺ Recalibrate goes back if the scale looks off. Then tap Next →.

   Remove or fix a wrong wall

   Tap the wall so it's selected and a red trash can appears beside it. Tap the trash can to delete it, or drag the wall to where it belongs. Undo (the curved arrow at the bottom, or Ctrl+Z / ⌘+Z) brings back anything you removed.

   Only one room? Say whether its walls are inside or outside

   When the AI finds just one room's outline (a picture of a single room), the Walls step reads Room walls and asks These walls are: A room inside a home (built as thinner interior walls) or Outside walls of a building (built as thicker exterior walls). It makes a best guess from the room's size; change it if it's wrong.

   Step 3 of 3 · Doors & windows, then Create design

   The AI's doors, windows and stairs are placed on your plan and listed under Placed. Each one has a number on the plan that matches its row: tap a row to find it on the plan, or tap one on the plan to jump to its row. In each row you can: - change the type (a door can become an opening or a window without deleting it), - tap the width to type it exactly, - for doors, flip the swing (In / Out) and the hinge side (L / R), - delete it with the trash can. Missing one? Tap its type (Door, Window, Sliding window, Opening, Sliding glass door, Sliding, French door, Pocket door, Barn door, Garage door, Fireplace or Stairs), then tap the wall where it goes and drag the dots at its ends to fit. Drag the middle of a selected one to slide it, even onto another wall. When it all matches, tap Create design.

    You've got a real, editable floor plan

    The design opens in the editor: rooms are tinted, every wall, door and window is editable, and the full catalog is ready for furnishing. From here it works exactly like a plan you drew by hand. To set a wall's exact length, tap the wall and type it (see Edit walls on the plan). To see your original drawing under the plan, turn on Layers → Show original plan (traced photo).

    Check it in 3D

    Tap View in 3D (the purple cube in the toolbar) and the imported plan stands up, with the doors and windows where your plan put them. It's a good final check that the trace matches the plan you started from.

    Stopped part-way? Continue from Home

    Your import is saved on this device as you go. If you close it before tapping Create design (the × at the top right; once you've changed something it asks first, so choose Leave — keep my progress), Home shows Continue your floor plan import with a picture of your plan. Tap Continue to carry on where you stopped, or Discard to drop it.
