Importing a floor plan with AI tracing
Give the app a picture of a floor plan — a blueprint, a listing plan, or a neat sketch — and AI drafts the walls, doors, and windows for you. You review five quick steps, then it becomes a normal, fully editable design.
If you already have a floor plan — an architect's blueprint, the plan from a listing, or a hand-drawn sketch — you don't have to rebuild it from scratch. Import the image and either trace over it yourself or let AI draft it: the AI reads the image and traces the exterior outline, interior walls, doors, windows, and stairs for you.
The AI path is marked Experimental on purpose: it does most of the work, but you stay in charge. The import runs as a five-step wizard — Calibrate, Exterior walls, Interior walls, Doors & windows, Review — and at every step you can fix anything the AI got wrong before it becomes your floor plan.

Start a new design from a floor plan image
Open the new design dialog (the + button) and choose the Floor Plan Image tile — “Trace it yourself or let AI draft it.” Then pick the image from your device: JPEG, PNG, and WebP files work.

Check the preview
The import works best with a clear, high-resolution plan — a printed architectural blueprint or a neat hand-drawn sketch. The sharper the walls and labels, the better the trace. If the picture is blurry or skewed, tap Choose different and retake it straight-on.

Name it, then choose “Let AI draft it”
Give the design a name, then pick a mode: Trace it myself (“draw over the plan for full control”) or Let AI draft it (“AI traces the walls, doors, and windows for you to refine”). Choosing AI shows a short heads-up about what you'll be able to fix. While it reads the image you'll see “Reading your floor plan…” — it can take up to a minute.

Step 1 · Calibrate the scale
Drag crosshairs ① and ② onto two points a known distance apart — usually a labelled wall (here, the bedroom's 12-foot wall). A magnifier helps you land them precisely, and you can pinch to zoom. Type the real distance in ft/in or m/cm, then tap Set scale →. This one measurement is what makes every wall in the import come out at real-world size.

Step 2 · Review the exterior outline
AI has already traced the outline — your job is to check it against the drawing underneath. Drag a corner to move it, drag a wall by its middle to shift the whole wall, tap a wall to add a corner, or tap a corner and then × to delete it. Walls snap to 90° (switch the snap to Any for angled walls), and a Recalibrate link takes you back a step if the scale looks off.

Step 3 · Review the interior walls
AI adds the interior walls next — these are dividers only; the outside is already traced. Drag an endpoint to move a wall, drag its middle to shift it, or tap a corner and × to remove one. To draw a wall the AI missed: move the crosshair to its start, pull the ⊕ handle along the wall, and release to drop each corner — End chain (or Esc) finishes that run. Trace straight through doorways; openings come in the next step.

Step 4 · Doors, windows & more
The AI's doors and windows arrive pre-placed, listed under Placed with their widths — doors also carry an In/Out swing and L/R hinge side you can flip. To add one, pick a type — Door, Window, Opening, Sliding glass, Sliding, French, Garage, Fireplace, or Stairs — then tap a wall to drop it. Drag the two crosshairs onto the opening's edges, or drag the line between them to slide it along the wall. Tap any placed item to select it, then × deletes it and ○ re-seats it on the nearest wall.

Step 5 · Review the wall lengths
The last step lists every exterior and interior wall with its measured length. Override any length to match what the plan says — if your overrides don't close the shape, the last wall is auto-adjusted. When the numbers read right, tap Create design.

You've got a real, editable floor plan
The import lands in the editor as a normal design: rooms are detected and tinted with their areas, every wall and door is editable, and the full catalog is ready for furnishing. From here it behaves exactly like a plan you drew by hand.

Check it in 3D
One tap on View in 3D and the imported plan stands up — walls, windows, and doors where the blueprint put them. It's a great final sanity check that the trace matches the plan you started from.

Tips
Calibrate against the longest labelled wall
Any known distance works, but a longer reference spreads any small crosshair error across more pixels — so the whole plan comes out more accurate than calibrating against a short closet wall.
Fix it now or fix it later — both work
Anything you miss in the wizard can still be changed in the editor afterwards: walls, doors, windows, and dimensions all stay editable. The wizard is just the fastest place to fix things, because the original image is right underneath.

The Report a problem button in the wizard's top bar sends us your plan image and the current trace automatically, with a note about what's off. We read every report — it's how the AI gets better.
Common mistakes
Skipping the calibration check
If the scale reference was placed sloppily, every wall inherits the error. Land the crosshairs with the magnifier on two crisp points with a labelled distance — it's the one step worth being fussy about.
Re-tracing the outside as interior walls
Step 3 is for dividers only — the exterior is already traced. Drawing interior walls on top of the outline creates doubled walls in the result.
Expecting furniture from the drawing
The import traces the structure — walls, doors, windows, openings, and stairs. Sofas and beds printed on the blueprint aren't imported; furnish from the catalog afterwards, where every piece is to scale and editable.
Frequently asked questions
What images can I import?
JPEG, PNG, and WebP images. A straight-on photo of a paper plan works well — good light, no keystone angle. For a PDF plan, take a screenshot of the plan page and import that image.
How is this different from “Use Room Photo”?
Use Room Photo analyzes a photo of the room itself and estimates a plan from it. Floor Plan Image starts from an existing plan drawing — a blueprint or sketch — and traces it precisely, which is the right tool when the plan already exists on paper.
How accurate is the AI draft?
It's experimental — it usually gets the shape and most openings, and it can miss or misplace some. That's exactly what the review steps are for: every corner, wall, and opening is fixable before you tap Create design, and the Review step lets you type exact wall lengths.
Can I trace the plan myself instead?
Yes — choose Trace it myself on the mode step. You get the same wizard and tools, starting from a blank trace instead of an AI draft. There's a separate guide for that flow under Getting Started.
Does it work in metric?
Yes. The calibrate step takes the reference distance in feet/inches or meters/centimeters — pick the unit toggle next to the distance field.
