Start, switch, rename, and delete your designs

The green + at the top left starts a new design or opens another one, even while you're in the middle of one. The ⋮ next to the design's name renames, copies or deletes it.

You don't have to close a design to start another one. Everything you need is in two places at the top of the editor: the green + button at the top left, which starts a new design or opens one you already have, and the ⋮ button next to the design's name, which renames, copies or deletes the design you're in.

Every change saves automatically, so you can jump between designs at any time without losing anything.

Step by step

  1. 1

Tap the + at the top left

The green + sits next to the RoomSketch3D logo (and the grid-shaped Dashboard button on a computer). It works with a design already open. It opens Create New or Select Floor Plan.

The + button: new design, or open a saved one.
  2. 2

    Start a brand-new design

The Start New tiles at the top make a new design: Rectangular Floor Plan (type the width and length), Custom Floor Plan (draw any shape), Floor Plan Image or PDF, Use Room Photo, Use Template (ready-made layouts) or From Backup (a backup file you exported). The design you were in stays exactly as you left it. See ways to start a floor plan for which one to pick.

Start New: six ways to begin a new design.
  3. 3

    Open (switch to) another design

Scroll down to Your Designs. Every design you've made is listed, newest first; the one you're in is outlined in blue with a Current tag. Click or tap any other row to open it. If the list is long, type part of a name in Search.

Tap a row to open that design. Current marks the one you're in.
  4. 4

Rename: tap ⋮ next to the name

Tap the ⋮ right of the design's name at the top of the screen and choose Edit design name. (On a computer you can also click the name itself.)

    ⋮ → Edit design name.
  5. 5

Type the new name and tap the check mark

The current name opens already selected, so just type the new one (up to 50 characters) and tap the ✓, or press Enter. Tap × or press Esc to keep the old name. On a phone the name box stretches across the top bar, with × on the left and ✓ on the right.

Type, then ✓ to save the name.
  6. 6

    Delete the design you're in

Tap ⋮ → Delete design. You're asked Delete “name”? This can't be undone. Choose OK and the design is deleted, and the design list opens so you can pick another one or start a new one.

⋮ → Delete design, then confirm.
  7. 7

Or delete any design from the list

Open the + and find the design under Your Designs. Each row has three icons on the right: Duplicate, Export (download a backup; not shown in the iPhone and Android apps) and the trash can. Tap the trash can.

  8. 8

    Tap Confirm

The trash can turns into a red Confirm button. Tap it and the design is gone from the list. If you change your mind, just don't tap Confirm.

    Second tap: Confirm deletes it.
  9. 9

    Copy a design instead (Duplicate)

Want to try a different version without losing the original? Tap the copy icon on a design's row, or ⋮ → Duplicate for the design you're in (on a computer the copy opens in a new browser tab). The copy is called “name (Copy)”, so rename it straight away. More in duplicate or copy a floor plan.

The copy icon makes an independent copy.

All your designs in one place: the Dashboard

On a computer, the grid-shaped button next to the logo opens My Designs, with a card for every design. Each card has Edit (open it), Duplicate and Delete (it asks you to confirm). New Design at the top right starts a new one. Rename a design from inside the editor.

My Designs: Edit, Duplicate, or Delete each design.
  11. 11

    On a phone

Same buttons, same places: the green + at the top left and the ⋮ right of the design's name. The ⋮ menu has Edit design name, Duplicate and Delete design.

Phone: ⋮ next to the name.

    Your Designs on a phone

Tap + and scroll down to Your Designs. Tap a row to open it, or use the icons on the right to copy or delete it.

Phone: tap + and scroll to Your Designs.

Tips

Name designs as you go

“Kitchen remodel - Option B” is much easier to find later than three designs called My Design. Rename right after you create or copy a design.

Back up before you delete

Not sure you'll never need it? On a computer, tap the download icon on its row (or Export / Print / Share → Backup) first. The file can be brought back any time with + → From Backup. See export a backup.

Try ideas in a copy

Duplicate a design before a big change, then experiment in the copy. Your original stays untouched.

Common mistakes

Looking for a Save or Close button

There isn't one. Every change saves automatically, so just tap + and open or start the next design.

Deleting the wrong row

The list shows names, not pictures. Check the name (and the Current tag) before you tap Confirm. Deleted designs can't be recovered.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make another design when I already have one open?

Tap the green + at the top left of the editor and choose one of the Start New options. Your current design is already saved and stays in Your Designs.

How do I go back to a design I made earlier?

Tap + and scroll to Your Designs, then tap its name. On a computer you can also use the Dashboard button (the grid icon next to the logo) and click Edit on its card.

How do I rename a floor plan?

Open it, tap ⋮ next to its name at the top, choose Edit design name, type the new name and tap ✓. On a computer you can also click the name itself.

Can I get a deleted design back?

No. Deleting is permanent, for us too. If you might want it later, export a backup first (the download icon on its row, on a computer), or keep it and rename it Old instead.

Is there a limit on how many designs I can have?

No. Make as many designs and copies as you like.

Why don't I see the download icon on my phone?

Backup files can be exported from the website only (app.roomsketch3d.com on a computer). Your designs are the same everywhere, so open the design there and download its backup.
